California! A prophet on the burning shore
California! I'll be knocking on the golden door
Your parents should have taught you that.

FWIW - he would apply the same disgust at Trumpian attempts to direct the economy.

Think all my Cal PoliSci profs from ~30 yrs ago would get a chortle at that!

Even if I don't agree with all of Hayek's politics, think it's one of the best reads of the 20th century, given the the context of the times (along with Keynes' Econ Consequences).

His guidance: beware good intentions.

I suppose neither of you would be interested in discussing The Road to Serfdom? :)

(ok, ok, i know i'm poking the bear with bsky sensitivities here... but this site is also a bubble, let's all remember that!)

Even the lightest understanding of 20th century history would explain why that 'oh no' has some justification.

And yet you search "grok csam" on google news and first hit is from september. and no politician is saying 'we will keep AI from showing your daughter naked'.

what is happening?

Look up the many famous Austin based startups that have IPO’d or otherwise had big exits.

There are a few. But it’s not even the same conversation as SF, despite them trying to make happen for over a decade.

Also feels like “I will keep AI from outputting pics that show your daughter naked” should be, like, obvious politics 101… and yet
January 1, 2026 at 10:34 PM
I mean for that matter, even some state AGs may want to pipe up for in-jurisdiction CSAM prosecutions… but not much so far

It’s wild their corporate risk mgmt isn’t considering that there may be a diff federal govt at some point.

If you can ignore the editorial section, been reading the WSJ news the last 9 mos and incredibly impressed by a lot of their reporting.

Bizarre split in what the news room and opinion think “professionalism” means over there, but the news is very good.

I doubt even the marketing teams putting them up love them.

But there was a capital raise round, and now budget for marketing spend and by gosh it’s gonna happen, whether it is good spend or not.

See: Two Minute Hate

It’s so fucking dumb they can’t see (or actually like) being manipulated like this.

does it count when there's an uptick of obviously fake account followers? feels like have had to block more per day than normal over holidays.
December 31, 2025 at 8:54 PM
Sorry that happened.

Bluesky "nice" a delusion, just setting a low bar because it's not the hell site.

Touch certain topics (see "there may be a few good uses of AI") or certain favored people, and see know-nothingism and tribalism emerge just like anywhere else, except "not right-wing."

Thread is making me laugh at myself that I’ve been stressed about my 7 day holiday wine (and cookie) consumption, despite knowing I’m going back modal 0 during weekdays imminently in Jan.

The entire Free Press thing is calling yourself a “normie” to gaslight the actual center that the Free Press isn’t just conservatives with less stringent writing but same desired outcomes.

Bad faith engagement is at the core of what Bari, Kat, etc do, but they try to keep plausible deniability.

None of these guy have endured 'Crack the Case' interview prep.

Looking at post Bretton Woods to now, and assuming all those assumptions hold looking ahead though... also risky

Bought my wife a 60s Hasselblad when we were still dating (15+ yrs ago) -- it's one of the best constructed physical items I've ever held.

The springs and folding mechanism in the viewfinder operate with perfect smoothness and tactility and no sign of being older than I am. It's magical.

You are very welcome, Furious East Bay person (coming at ya from the north bay)

Been meaning to get into it, but have a truly great shop with wonderful people in town I don't want to stop supporting.

Madonna Celebration Tour.

On one hand, respect for trying at 65, but on the other... c'mon, who is this for?
December 30, 2025 at 1:44 AM
It's actually the perfect Bsky post.

Full of righteousness, low on insight, zero value translating into tactics for a different outcome.

Like, how does it change anything about the basic truth: "OK, so guess we gotta convince more people to vote for our preferred candidates"? It doesn't.
December 30, 2025 at 1:14 AM
You’re mostly talking about people in event marketing who are given a budget and are thinking along lines like “should we get the mountain climber again? Or that inspirational fencing while disabled champ? Oh, ok, we can go for someone more political as long as nobody will be offended.”
