one of the things that gets me about so many of the pundits who pontificate about "higher education" when they really mean a handful of elite private institutions is that most of them live within driving distance of either a community college or a non-selective public institution

This made me nostalgic for the glory days of FB and google search, ca. 2009-2015. Both now suck.

The 19th century abolitionist movement utilized a diversity of tactics and engaged in constant critical internal debate in the mission to end slavery. The movement needed speeches, lawyers, lawbreakers, newspapers, and armed resisters. History teaches us that freedom requires all of the above.

"I believe ardently that nonviolent resistance is in the big picture and the long term the most effective strategy, but that doesn't mean it must be polite, placid, or please our opponents, not least because nothing ever will and they'll lie and distort no matter what."

Yes, that’s right. The <public> University of Wisconsin - Madison now receives only 15% of its funding from the state, even as the legislature retains near-total regulatory control over us. Unfunded mandates & the privatization of public universities are No Good & Very Bad & we shouldn’t have them.

If the left had been indoctrinating people, MAGA wouldn't exist.

They would have been shut up & shut out.

It flourished because the left believes in democracy and people's freedom to think as they choose.

Why are we now using the words “abducting,” “kidnapping,” and “disappearing” for ICE arrests of educated English speakers? I’m glad to see the brutality called out, but I wish there were the same outrage when Mexican laborers are detained at home in front of their kids.

This segment from @maryannefranks.bsky.social is an incredibly tight argument that captures the breadth of the Trump assault on free speech perfectly and in less than a minute.

Spread it far and wide.
WOW. Watch a constitutional law expert completely DEBUNK Republicans’ censorship crusade, while articulating exactly how Donald Trump is threatening freedom of speech. 🔥

Absolutely no reason whatsoever for this kind of behavior. They could have literally just handed her a Notice to Appear in immigration court. There is zero (ZERO) requirement to take her into custody. The law is clear that arrest for someone who isn't "mandatory detention" is a MAY not a SHALL.

“this future sense is missing from the president and his political movement. Set against it…is a “radicalized politics of apocalyptic orientation” that “happily sacrifices the prospect of a future for a present-tense ‘victory’ or redefines the sacrifice of the future as victory itself.”

This is who we sent. Never committed a crime. A soccer team logo and a single picture of the rock and roll horns sent him to be tortured in El Salvador.
NEW! Sworn declarations filed last night confirm the Trump admin sent INNOCENT people to rot in prison El Salvador, including a professional soccer player jailed and tortured by the Maduro regime, who entered this country LEGALLY to seek asylum, and who has NO CRIMINAL RECORD in either country.

The end run against this fascist attack on the opposition is: dissolve the Democratic Party and re-form the opposition. The party’s brand is shot anyway. Call it the Freedom Party, draw the red-state discontent around the Reps’ attacks on personal freedoms.
With Orders, Investigations and Innuendo, Trump and G.O.P. Aim to Cripple the Left
The president and his allies in Congress are targeting the financial, digital and legal machinery that powers the Democratic Party and much of the progressive political world.
