Sounds like a clogged drain from inflammation. Could be "just a cold" could be a bacterial infection that can vary a lot in how bad it is. They might be holding off on antibiotics until it gets worse, hoping rest and fluids will clear it up. I'm not a doctor though and I don't know your pain.

The one at the church I went to growing up was underneath the stage so it was a big to-do to open it up for baptisms. I only ever saw it when basically a baby was born or somebody new joined the church. I forget if they did it for confirmation bc I didn't stay in the church that long.
