Truth #9
At its core, Band Aid was a group of young musicians trying to bring awareness to a terrible famine on the other side of the world, and they ended up changing the world. It was imperfect, but few would say now that the net/net is not positive. 15/🦋

Truth #8
The Band Aid Trust is not asking for a pat on the back with this new release, but streaming or listening helps their work continue. (youtu.be/_fOBkqtH_VQ?...) Here are two stories I wrote about Band Aid/Live Aid in 2014/2015: 13/🦋

Truth #7 (cont'd) ... gratitude I feel for Bob, Midge and all the artists who have participated over the years. Whenever I get the chance to see or speak with any one of them, I always let them know. 12/🦋

Truth #7
When I hear the song now, whether in its original form or other incarnations, I cannot speak on behalf of the people it set out to help. But I can relive, over and over, the feeling of joy and motivation the MUSIC, the MELODY and the performances had on my life, and the ... 11/🦋

Truth #6
I am one of those people, and I owe my writing and career choices to Bob Geldof and Midge Ure. Call me misguided if you must, but trust me when I say I have spent the past 40 years on a journey unraveling the impact this song had on me and how criticism and analysis of it helped me ... 9/🦋

Truth #5 (cont'd) ... then you must believe that many of the millions of people who watched Band Aid in 1984 and later Live Aid in 1985 were so inspired by these homespun, well-intended musical gestures that they changed their lives and career choices to help others and continue to do so today. 8/🦋

Truth #5
The miracle of MTV in America was real at the time. Band Aid bringing together 40 British pop stars of the day (with a few Americans, too) was the equivalent of 40 Taylor Swifts. If you believe Taylor Swift's opinions and endorsements impacted voters in the 2024 election ... 7/🦋

Truth #4 (cont'd)... or see it on microfiche at the public library weeks or months later... TV broadcasts did have footage, but very limited. And, a BBC report did not make it to most basic cable subscriptions in the U.S. until it appeared on MTV. 6/🦋 www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPZl...

Truth #4
Young people today cannot imagine the impact the single and video had when they were released 40 years ago. Images shared around the world were not a thing then. If you wanted to read a newspaper from another country you had to fly there ... 5/🦋

Truth #3
BUT many of the revisionists and those who wish to cancel the song forever don't realize that the song is most powerful when it stands in its original form as the history of the day and what we can glean from that time. 4/🦋

The backlash was swift and immediate and continues 40 years later and is in many cases warranted. 3/🦋

Truth #1
As cringey as many people feel the lyrics to "Do They Know It's Christmas" were/are, they capture the naivete of the era, the blindness to a white savior mentality and views on race and geography that had yet to be challenged in the public eye ... lessons waiting to be learned. 2/🦋
