Everyone pretends that it's not exploitation because it's job training. But the jobs don't exist, and the entire enterprise depends on the massively-undercompensated labor of the "trainees".

I think that very few people in academia have come to terms with what it means that most schools depend on grad student labor but prepare grad students for a job market that doesn't exist.
