How can we understand the forces that keep political conflict alive in social life, even when its political salience has waned? In my and Anna van Vree's new working paper, we analyse 27 focus groups on immigration to show how moral boundaries make division sticky & potent: osf.io/preprints/so...

Findings #3: While research suggests that such topics exist which are per definition moral (think: gender/sexuality or war) and others which are non-moral (think: public admin or taxation), we show that the moralization of topics is highly variable 📊

Findings #2: The tendency to moralize is *not* ideologically patterned. Left and right, extreme and mainstream moralize to the same extent. Occasionally, extreme parties start out with higher levels of moralization, but over time, they adjust to mainstream parties' moralization levels 📈

Findings #1: Political communication has become more moralized over time! This trend is pretty consistent across the 10 countries in focus of our study, with an estimated av. increase of 15%-points over 60 y 😮:

#3 I also hope our study can inspire to combine computational text analysis of large corpora & targeted, in-depth qualitative work to add transparency and deeper understanding of pol communication. With the qual part, we identified the overwhelming use of moral rhetoric to attack opponents 🥊👺

What is happening in German political discourse on immigration right now? It is being intensely moralized: Merz is accused of a “Tabubruch” and for having opened “das Tor zur Hölle” – but according to him “es wird nicht falsch, nur weil es die Falschen für richtig halten”.

We also find that left- and right-wing parties tend to moralize in equal measure, indicating that neither of the two ideological camps structuring modern Western political systems is innately more geared to see the world in a moral light than the other. 7/11

What did we find? In all countries but Spain political communication today is more heavily morally loaded than it was six decades ago. The increase is substantial: On average, the estimated increase amounts to 15 percentage points! 5/11
