I completely understand that! I started cutting the readings short if they weren’t paying attention - but often if we found something they liked, we just did it over and over again and they got into the rhythm eventually. Some nights I bailed after a few pages (and I still do it now) to save sanity.

For us it’s been the kids sitting in a lap or next to us looking at the pictures while we point at the words so they can also follow along (even at two). It can help the kids to realize that the books have words when they get to school, too.

And also, I hope you enjoy your time here and I always appreciate your work. My husband is at the game tonight as a Chicago-born hockey fan and your coverage of the Blackhawks is one of our main sources when it comes to keeping up with them from out here. Thanks!

That’s fair. If you’re ever up for it, Seattle’s light rail is easy to navigate and you can connect to it from the arena area by use of the monorail. If you haven’t used it, it’s a nice little system to connect you to the other (better) food areas in the city!

Out of curiosity, what is your meal of choice in the PNW when you’re here? I’m a sucker for Chicago food but I also love the PNW cuisine and it makes me curious to know what other Midwesterners think!

I’m happy to review the businesses I frequent with info that might be helpful, but I find it exhausting to be battered by requests to review them when I’ve 1) already done so and 2) am a years-long repeat customer. I want the staff to still get bonuses for doing a great job without having to review.

It’s also eye-opening to try it and end up finding out how useful/easy/fun it can be! My kids get annoyed any time we are in Seattle and not using transit because they prefer it for getting around.

I was worried when mine were running around during a small graveside service but ended up being told by the family that it was nice to have the kids there laughing and playing. I’m sure mileage varies, but I think it’s fine and the effort is appreciated.

About how long are you in transit? I’m wondering if it will be possible with kids… though they are kids who love buses and trains

As a fellow train mom, there’s an “all about trains” book that is a winner in our house, but nothing beats the Cascades Amtrak experience/public transit light and heavy rail trips for a tidal wave of information.

The drivers here are sooooo bad. They don’t get over for emergency vehicles and the number of clearly blown red lights I see on my 10 minute commute is alarming. WA drivers are how my kids learned to say “that was a bad choice”

A friend who taught kindergarten said they had kids coming in to school who didn’t know books had words in them. Like, did not know that there were words on the page that were being read.

Did I miss something or is there actually a candidate on the ballot advocating for Canada to be annexed by the US?

There’s a guy in Japan who takes trains and ferries and makes wordless video diaries of his (delightful) experiences in various cabin types and they are compelling! I support this sponsored career path! Would read!

After working at a public-facing financial institution, I’m here to note that the number of people who don’t carry any ID to facilitate anticipated transactions is shockingly high. It’s insane for anyone to think a national card to be required for 350+ million people and be logistically possible.

What do you mean? Public schools still exist and are functioning; is that the question?
April 23, 2025 at 4:41 PM
All that to say, daycare is crazy expensive and I think the pandemic experience taught us that a lot of parents like having purpose other than childrearing 24/7 to help us be better parents.

I can’t tell whether they think $5,000 is a lot or whether they are so out of touch as to think $5,000 is enough to incentivize a birth but $5,000 is not enough for me to quit my job and be a SAHM for 5 years until public school starts either. Like, what is the goal?

Just choked laughing at the kid’s ball practice and the parents are looking at me funny

As a YA reader, YA books were the only ones that captivated me at the time. Now that I’m older, adult stories resonate with me and when I revisit the classics, they sit differently and more appealingly with my adult brain. The idea that YA as a genre is a waste is immature thinking on its face.
