Basically, my job is books” “...I've got a few minutes to answer your submissions questions if you have them! I've spent 10+ years on both sides of the submissions game, as a writer and an editor. Programs at Michener, Columbia, Yale, & more have brought me in to help their students navigate the submissions process. & I don't know if you heard, but we've got a few contests open right now at Sarabande! How can I help?” Q: “What is a writer's statement and how do I write one if I have no formal training in writing?” A: “I'll answer the second part first, which is that YOU are the world expert on your work! You are totally qualified to speak about the what, why, and how of your writing, and it's not necessary to load your statement with any jargon that doesn't come naturally to you. You can use your normal writing voice. And because you're an expert on your work, you probably already have in mind a handful of authors who have influenced you & informed your writing. A writer's statement often includes a mention of these authors and works your writing is in conversation with.”
