I may be tired and a little hoarse, but as I said again and again on the Senate floor, this is a moment where we cannot afford to be silent, when we must speak up.

The scripture story for this Lent Sunday is about a fox and a hen - a contrast between empire and empathy.

Are we willing to choose vulnerability?

Jesus laments because his people often choose wrongly. And now, I lament, too.

America has sided with the fox.

This morning I sit & listen for #abirdfromthelord; I hear so many, including my persistent rooster who knows not how to tell time, but I see very few. Isn’t that how it is at times? We glimpse just the evidence. And yet their songs-even those of the rooster-continue the song of creation Aslan sings.

“I was hungry” and you cut $1 Billion in funding to schools and food banks.

“I was sick” and you worked to gut medicaid, depriving me of healthcare.

“I was a stranger” and you defined my humanity by legal status.

Several new arrivals since yesterday morning - sandhill cranes, eastern bluebirds, maybe a rock pigeon.

Besides spending 10+ glorious minutes a day listening and watching for #abirdfromthelord, I’ve also been relishing in the richness of Mary Oliver poems. This one rings true today more than ever.

The blue jays took center stage this morning singing their thoughts, their praises, their thanks.
Newcomers also showed up amongst the regulars- a yellow-rumped warbler, common grackle, white-breasted nuthatch, brown-headed cowbird and white-throated sparrow.

Today’s #abirdfromthelord visitors were all the regulars, including red-winged blackbirds. Merlin told me that red-winged blackbirds are the “Bird of the Day” which is great timing because I was thinking about them today, enjoying their morning songs.

I wonder if the birds take delight in their cousins’ and neighbors’ songs - distinct from their own - yet adding to the morning hours. Is it to them a melody or cacophany? Something to compete with or join in? Do they understand the songs like one might learn a 2nd or 3rd language?

Tomorrow Lent begins and I will begin my favorite Lenten spiritual practice: #aBirdFromTheLord.

It's beautifully simple: sit outside for ten minutes each day and look for birds.

Want to join in? You're invited!

When we Christians are more known for our support of presidents than we are for our support of the poor, the immigrant, the marginalized, and the oppressed, that is when we know we are following someone other than Jesus and we have a lot of repenting to do.
