How aware is/are your MP(s) of what your local universities deliver beyond taught programmes? Little in political debate or media suggests that their understanding is high. Perhaps it's time to add tutorials with worked examples to the mix, before it's too late. ICSs offer easy starting points. 8/8

Many today use Ottar Grønvik’s series of studies of the Eggja stone as the basis when presenting the inscription. But there is still much we do not completely understand.

Not all were equally convinced, though, and some time later Lis Jacobsen in Denmark published her study, with detailed criticisms of Olsen’s external method (which had made the inscription fit within a particular interpretative framework). Her approach was text-internal, critical and philological.

Haakon Shetelig wrote this to Olsen in 1919 (rough transl.): “Upon returning home, I have studied this work thoroughly. I dream about it at night and talk about it in the morning and evening. The method is highly surprising, one is confused at first. But the result is convincing. I am convinced.”

Magnus Olsen was an Old Norse philologist of many skills as well as a powerful imagination. When his first study of the Eggja inscription came out, it created awe and excitement, as the many letters and postcards in the Runic Archives show.

Ever since then, the stone has caused much discussion and debate - including a runological methodology debate during the first half of the 20th century.
