Spoke too soon. Apple capitulated today. GPS is owned and managed by US Space Force, and both Google and Apple use it for their civilian applications. My hunch is the Drumpf admin threatened to revoke their usage if they didn't change it, thus hosing both their Maps apps.

Hm thinking about this a bit more. What's more likely is Drumpf administration threatening to terminate Apple's and GG's use of Landsat if they don't capitulate, so bye bye Maps. They could easily pull that plug & destroy them. I think I'm gonna buy some road atlases & keep them in my trunk.

Folks were saying that Apple hadn't updated but.. I hate to burst bubbles. A search on Apple Maps for "Gulf of" auto-completed to Gulf of America. They are no better. Then I got to thinking: neither GG nor AAPL control this info. GPS systems are maintained by... our military. GG & AAPL lease it.

They, along with every tech company, already do. There are back doors funneling our data to the NSA and have been for a couple decades.
