The urgency of the climate crisis cannot be used as an excuse for the endless extraction of minerals like nickel and the serious impacts to frontline communities and ecosystems.

As one of the countries most vulnerable to the climate crisis, people across the Philippines understand the urgency of climate action. Yet some communities are not only suffering direct impacts from climate change but are also experiencing serious consequences from the rush for transition minerals.

❗NEW REPORT❗ "Broken Promises": Philippines Nickel Mining Causes Rights Abuses and Increases Climate Vulnerability highlights the toll of nickel mining in the Caraga Region in Northern Mindanao, home to more mines than any other part of the country.

Nearly 100 community members report:
🚩 severe air and water pollution
🚩 health problems
🚩 destruction of fishing and farming livelihoods
🚩 land grabbing
🚩 dangerous working conditions
🚩 threats to Indigenous Peoples’ rights and ways of life
🚩 fear of retaliation for speaking out
