As always, things would be better if we had an elected school committee.
Councilor-at-large Julia Mejia said she was "disappointed" that she wasn't briefed on the decisions before they were announced. "This is a situation where if we had an elected School Committee rather than an appointed one, we'd be having a different conversation" she said. "We wouldn't be learning about it on the news. There would have been more deliberation and a different process. The appointed School Committee will be making a decision on Jan. 22 that has already been made."

Someone on here (& apologies that I don't recall who) recently recommended reading Astra Taylor. I'm in the 2nd chapter of _Remake the World_ & yes, this is the business. It's so good to have someone lay out & remind you of things that you know but which are difficult to keep front of mind.
To do this means becoming more acquainted with failure, something most of us would rather avoid. Like those who prefer punditry to campaigning, I like to be right. And messy political work doesn't always allow for the certainty that opining does. Even if you're the self-righteous sort—a tendency I confess to sharing with many activists—wanting to be right. Is something different, a vice common to the intellectuals and professional prattlers. If you care about being smart and having an analysis that trumps the others, it's safer to be cynical about attempts to create social change, and to list all the logical reasons such efforts will likely fail—to always bet on the status quo maintaining its grip. Activism requires a kind of willed hopefulness, a readiness to bash your head against a wall so that it may crumble or crack, even if you know all the arguments about why what you're doing is probably doomed and all the reasons the wall is unlikely to budge.
