After 44 years of living and dying with HIV and AIDS, we shouldn’t waste more any more time. We deserve multiple accessible prevention and treatment options; we deserve dignified, stigma-free care. We deserve to live.

People living in Africa; people living in poverty; people reliant on foreign aid.

When I reflect on thriving with HIV, I’m often confronted by my socioeconomic and scientific privilege. We shouldn’t live in a world where only the privileged few get the chance to survive.

Severe funding cuts mean that many people who are HIV negative can no longer access HIV PrEP, an essential prevention tool. Some living with HIV have not been able to access their life-saving antiretroviral medications. And who’s mostly been affected?

The short, sad answer is that it hasn’t. Last year, a person died of an AIDS-related illness every single minute of the year. Even more—over a million—newly contracted HIV. This year’s numbers may be more shocking.

This certainly seems like an important strategy going forward — for varied reasons, as you mention. It’s great to have data showing that it’s as effective as daily dosing.
