The event will take place September 16–17, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM EST. Attendees can join in person at the Multipurpose Resource Room or online via Zoom. The registration deadline for both options is September 5, 2025, and accommodation requests for in-person attendance are due by September 1, 2025. A flyer titled “State of the Science Conference – Call for Student Submissions,” hosted by Gallaudet University and available in person or via Zoom on September 16–17, 2025. It invites student researchers working on Deaf or Hard of Hearing accessibility to submit proposals. Topics include captioning technology, usability of hearing aids or mobile apps, sign language tools, accessibility in public spaces, and disability policy. The top-ranked submissions will win a prize. Submission deadline is July 23, 2025 (Anywhere on Earth), with notifications sent by August 22, 2025. The Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Technology for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is conducting an in-person deaf-friendly study on text-to-speech technologies at Gallaudet University. Looking for people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have hearing loss to join our co-design session

Oliver Suchanek and @katta.bsky.social at #CHI2025. Refreshing to see a good deaf-hearing collaborator dynamic: both presenters signed, and interpreters did the voicing. So much more respectful than the typical scenario of the deaf presenter signing and the hearing presenter talking up a storm.

The Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Technology for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is conducting a Zoom focus group on deaf-friendly text-to-speech technologies at Gallaudet University. We are looking for participants who are deaf, hard of hearing or have hearing loss.
Flyer: Gallaudet University Text-to-Speech Study; looking for focus group participants. You must be: 18 years or older; deaf, hard of hearing or have hearing loss; familiar with communication technology; able to participate in an online Zoom session on a computer. We want to know what you think! We want to learn how to improve Text-to-Speech technology (TTS) for individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or have hearing loss. TTS is a technology that allows you to convert text to speech automatically. This involves: One-Time Online Session in ASL and English. Duration: 12O min. Compensation: $75. The American deaf chess team brought home three medals at the 6th Pan-American Games in Canoas, Brazil. One gold in the rapid tournament, and one gold and one silver in classical time controls. What struck me is how much we’ve come to rely on modern communication tools.

As an accessibility professional, looking at what platforms do is of supreme importance to me and one of the first things I check. This is ... a start. The feature seems to be super-glitchy, though. And of course, there's also captions, etc etc etc.
