The way he slides into the boards it could be MCL (based on the way the knee torques outwards) or a high ankle sprain (mechanism of injury is a dorsiflexion and eversion movement which is what his ankle is doing here). Either way, not great.

It looked bad, and it looked like MCL, although I don't think they ever announced specifics of the injury. If it was an isolated MCL tear (no other ligament/structural injury) then conservative treatment isn't uncommon these days. This is a flow chart from e3Rehab that might apply in Laine's case.
