My mugger was a shaky, nervous, inexperienced, unprofessional junkie. We were in front of my house, and the chance that an older brother might seek revenge if I knocked out his teeth got him five 1989 dollars, but he accepted my firm rejection that I surrender my wallet or credit cards.

At the time, I liked the Clinton administration because he made room for genuine progressives like you, but Clintonian triangulation, Al Gore's commercialized internet, and China's integration into the US economy are all stops on the path that got us here.

This is just a pause between rounds to regroup -- the shutdown will be back in January -- and maybe even with court rulings that keep SNAP funding in place. It was already too late to extend the ACA benefits, so the justification is to minimize suffering heading into the 2026 elections.

I'm not saying it would apply to the internet that we have, but that the internet would have been different and better if Clinton and Gore had chosen to regulate it via the FCC (and, as a general principle, if Reagan and Bush hadn't changed the FCC rules around political speech).

I mispoke -- I meant the FCC fairness doctrine, frequently colloquially (and incorrectly!) lumped together with the equal time rule. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairnes...

I love your story, but I don't love that people are using FB as the infrastructure.

It is convenient that many CEOs handed us a beautiful list, by showing up at T's inauguration, sponsoring the parade, and showing up at T's dinner parties.

I fantasize about a library style set of shelves on rollers, so I can fit a dozen shelves into the space of three against the wall.

I love that kids are being told that reducing crime is the best way to resist authority.

And they made money off the deal!

Including during Democratic administrations -- Clinton addicted the DNC to large-donor cash, hamstringing progressive politics for the following three decades and Obama imagined that writing checks to Elon and skipping anti-trust enforcement of big tech would secure Democratic hegemony.

Only plausible if Federal Reserve remains independent and the dollar remains sound.

My mind reels at the implication that the administration is greenlighting bribery and wanting to own the companies that corruptly undermine foreign governments.

At the very least, they should frame the daily Trump news as one continuing story of predictable autocratic consolidation rather than presenting each outrage as an isolated conundrum.
