look, I don't know WHY this brand of "Oriental Raisin Tea" has a big ass "MAN" Chinese character on it, but I do know that I bought it as a joke for that reason a decade ago, fell in love the flavor and now my girlfriend is hooked on it too

I wouldn’t have personally picked the Lincoln Town Car to join the Lowrider canon, but I love to see it

I’d argue that the front row seats at the Academy Museum’s Ted Mann Theater are pretty freakin great

Wendy's Tortas, the best tortas I've ever had. They now have 3 locations in greater East LA, I've only been to the one in Lincoln Heights and it's a great restaurant to grab some beers as well.

Busy Bee Market in San Pedro. South Bay locals don't shut up about this place, and they are right to do so! Probably has the most unique bread of any classic sub spot, in that it's softer than a damn pillow and before eating here I would have thought that sounded bad, but it's gooooood.

La Espanola Meats, Inc. in San Pedro: The House Bocata is another perfect, mind-blowing sandwich in a small grocery store dedicated to a specific country's foods. Serrano Ham, sliced sausage of the day, manchego, and peppers drizzled with a beautiful Spanish olive oil. Out. Of. This. World. Good!

Attari Sandwich Shop in Westwood, the only Iranian sandwiches I've ever had, and they're a delight!
Larchmont Wine & Cheese: A modern Hollywood classic. Everyone I know who has worked in TV got their start picking up sandwiches here. Nice and simple on fantastic, tough, French bread.

Today, those are what I would put on a "Mount Rushmore of LA Sandwiches" but here are some bonus LA classics:
Little Jewel of New Orleans. Every time I go here, the menu doubles in size, and everything I eat here is my new favorite. But if i had to choose, it's the soft shell crab Po Boy.

Philippe The Original in Chinatown, the French dip is famous and it's just great! I also just like that this place is very much a downtown diner institution. They open at 6am and construction workers, city employees, Dodger fans and various other types file in throughout the day.

Langer's in Westlake/MacArthur Park. The #19 pastrami sandwich is probably the most famous sandwich in LA and for damn good reason. Absolutely in the LA Food Hall of Fame. Probably the only Jewish deli in LA that my New York friends say holds a candle to places like Katz's.
May 6, 2025 at 5:54 PM
Cemitas Don Adrian: Without a doubt, the most underrated sandwich in LA. I'm always utterly blown away by all the amazing, complex flavors. Flavors I've never had in any other sandwich, or outside of Mexico for that matter. They're large and dense, so I'd recommend sharing 1 between 2 people.

Roma Market: This is a perfect, simple, actually Italian sandwich in the most perfect little Italian grocery. A sandwich that is so much of a "daily driver" that I tried, and failed, to convince my girlfriend that we should move into a place around the corner just so I could have it on the reg.

Someone asked me for 3-4 sandwiches that encapsulate LA, and I went a little overboard with my reply:
Banh Mi My Tho, the charbroiled pork was one of the first sandwiches I had when I came to LA and is still a big favorite. Amazing bread, out of this world BBQ pork, and a perfect mix of veggies.
