The Velvet Room by Zilpha Keatley Snyder (out of print so I have 2 copies). It's a children's book but I read it during a transitional point (around age 10-11) and I read it every so often to remind me of that time.

Subtitles helped my kids learn to read. I always have them on, they also help me process dialogue especially if they’re in an accent or if the audio is murky.

I used to be embarrassed when noting that one of my favorite books is a children's book (probably what would be considered "middle grade" these days), but I think it is more acceptable now.
