True, but even if your characterization is accurate, it might not have been something evidently so at the time. Hard to tell if one is being payed a salary from a family business unless one looks pretty deeply into someone's finances.

Hard but not undoable. Issue is that it's probably harder in less dense areas due to the cost of reaching people. We are more likely to see people like AOC in urban centers

Not to deny or affirm the characterization, but are there many people lining up to be politicians, even progressive ones, who do not have a significant safety net? If his stance, regardless of it's "authenticity", was consistently aligned with enough others, it might have been reason enough.
