The passing of Paul Newman (2008), Sean Connery (2020), Sidney Poitier (2022), and now Robert Redford (2025) signals the slow disappearance of a certain type of 20th century figure: men who embodied classic style in a way that reflected their taste, rather than a professional stylist.

Physicist and astronomer Willem de Sitter was born #OTD in 1872. He is best known for his work in Cosmology, applying Einstein’s general relativity to the dynamics and history of the universe, and also for strong "Jude Law as young Dumbledore" vibes. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️

Genuinely can't stop thinking about what the sky would look like on this weird-ass exoplanet.

Would there be times when the brown dwarfs appeared to overlap?

Would they ever both vanish from the sky altogether, like in Isaac Asimov's short story "Nightfall"? 🔭🧪
Today in "the universe is even weirder than we thought it was" news: an exoplanet appears to orbit its parent binary star system at an angle perpendicular to the plane of that system. ⚛️🧪🔭 physicsworld.com/a/exoplanet-...
