Listening to Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" as I read the article about the president backing down from Ukraine cease-fire demand.

Thank you American Community Media for inviting me to speak at your hosted media briefing.

Though my eyes are closed on the cover image for the story, I assure you that my eyes were (mostly) open when I spoke.

It's not every day that two colleagues from same school are counsel of record in separate filings at SCOTUS. @annie-lai.bsky.social represented immigration law scholars; Rose Cuison-Villazor and I represented members of Congress. Our briefs oppose the government's vacatur and termination of TPS.
May 9, 2025 at 12:43 AM
With Rose Cuison-Villazor, I had the honor of representing 48 members of Congress on an amicus brief that emphasized the importance of separation of powers that requires that the Executive not usurp Congressional and Judicial authority.

It's UC Irvine Giving Day.

You won't find a match for the Korematsu Center on the UC Irvine School of Law Giving Day Page, but let me put one out there.

If the Korematsu Center receives $5000 in gifts today, April 22, 2025, I'll match $5000.

I was hoping to engage in soothing retail therapy. Went to @coscto.bsky.social, only to be turned off by their new IMHO garish website. Sorry, but what fresh hell is this?

This isn't a flex. Each day, I spend an inordinate amount of time if I don't get genius level. Why? I think it's a combination of insecurity and the genius of apps and games that exploit insecurities, as well as the flattery - you're a genius!

But now that I have leveled up, I can now go to sleep.

In doing taxes this year, almost forgot that I had to file my mother's final estate tax return. Finished it, but it brought things back. And now the boy in the white cap is the only one left.

We've never filed 3 amicus briefs in one day. 2 support the law firms fighting the EOs targeting them; 1 is on birthright citizenship. W/ @aaldef.bsky.social; Center for Civil Rights and Critical Justice at @seattleulaw.bsky.social.

The attacks on law firms and lawyers must stop. Full stop.

On behalf of race and law centers, @seiu.org, @aftunion.bsky.social, @aaup.bsky.social, and several advocacy organizations, we offer our thoughts on why it must stop.

Honored to deliver the Neil Gotanda Lecture in Asian American Jurisprudence as part of a symposium commemorating the 25th anniversary of my first book.

I'm feeling cognitive dissonance brought on by the juxtaposition of the commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the new executive orders issuing from the new administration.

What are you feeling?

TROs are only granted for 14 days unless extended. Up next is the hearing on the preliminary injunction.

Looking forward to seeing again the sign I saw on Thursday, Nov. 21.

Securing a TRO doesn't mean we'll prevail at the PI stage. But we are relieved to have gotten a respite for our client.

As the semester winds down, the Korematsu Center @ucirvine.bsky.social Law School, joined as co-counsel in a challenge to a new Arkansas Alien Land Law.

This morning, the judge issued a TRO to prevent enforcement of the law against our client.

I've proposed a rule change that would eliminate the requirement that in Washington State court filings, that you have to include parallel citations to US Supreme Court decisions.

This change, which will save attorney/paralegal time which should produce cost savings for clients, is long overdue.

I always have a moment of panic when I get to the last step in filing something in the CM/ECF federal court filing system. And this was just for a Notice of Appearance.
