bonus: spent a few days in yokohama and tokyo before our flight back home. we got a hotel room with a balcony and the moment i stepped out, i heard screams 😂 (there was an amusement ride nearby)

and that's the end of 11 days in kyushu! i had a wonderful time exploring the region and definitely hope to visit again in future (avoiding the hot weather next time...!)

"halloween" fireworks turned out to be fireworks with alastor's insane playing in the background 😂😂 i was in disbelief at the intro (it took me a moment to process LOL)😂

moved to hotel amsterdam in huis ten bosch for our last night in kyushu. we were staying inside the theme park, and there were going to be fireworks for halloween at night!

glover garden was about 5 minutes away from the port by cab. nagasaki is surprisingly compact and easy to get around!

we were lucky enough to visit gunkanjima (the waves have to be within a certain height for disembarkation), an abandoned island in japan which used to be a coal mine right into the 70s. it was also a really hot day... and there was no shelter on the island 😂

all the talk about yufuin and beppu made us nostalgic for boueibu, and so we put on the new season (boueibu haikara) to watch at the ryokan... and found out that the main character is actually named UNZEN lmao (it was meant to be)

and there were so many cats! some of them were feral and wary of people, but one came up to me for pets so i think they must be well looked after by the local community 🥹

i'm glad we picked unzen as our onsen destination this trip despite there being better known places in the same region (beppu, yufuin, kurokawa, kirishima etc). it was so much quieter!

i learned later that it was an endangered species of bird (the red cr stands for critically endangered and vu is for vulnerable species) 😭

the trip to takachiho from kumamoto is nearly 3 hours by bus (one way), but getting to row a boat past a waterfall there made all the travelling time worth it 😭✨ there's something beautiful and magical about waterfalls and i don't think i'll ever get any closer to one!

day 6! takachiho in the miyazaki prefecture. Not many pics of the Amanoiwato shrine because we had to go through some kind of purification ritual to see the cave and photography wasn't allowed (it was all rather serious!)
