I think it also messed up some of the character interactions/development. Like the Matt/Heather relationship was rushed and didn't feel real

For fantasy try Brandon Sanderson, I'd start with Warbreaker.
I will always advocate for any @stephenking.bsky.social book but start with a classic like the Shining or Salem's Lot.
For sci Fi, Michael Crichton is fantastic, Jurassic Park or Congo are great starting points.
