Annoyingly our 2012 Maytag dishwasher's "normal" cycle doesn't drain the prewash water, it just opens the normal detergent door ~5 minutes into the cycle using the same water. Heavy cycle drains prewash water then refills. Will have to try the other cycles, now, to see what all they do.
