Once upon an evening in Los Angeles, I took a bunch of mushrooms by myself and sat out in the backyard of my bungalow under the dim urban stars, wondering what the fuck I was doing in this godless hellscape of a place. I was four years into my American adventure and lived with a gay couple at the time, and they had recently had an orgy in the hot tub that came with the property while I was away playing shows. By the time I got back, the water was grey. None of us knew how to clean it, so instead, I had it removed by a company that does that and only that. They did that by sawing the thing into six pieces. It was such a horrendous scene; I thought they would recycle the tub or something, but no. It left an odd space on a dedicated platform in the slopped backyard. I hastily arranged it into a kind of meditation area, garden shrine sort of thing. I had a collection of crystals which I placed there to charge in the sun and moonlight - hoping to cleanse the place, I suppose, transform it from the sight of an unsanctioned orgy followed by hot tub butchery to a sanctuary of the soul. It was there I sat, staring up at the sky, as the mushrooms took effect. If you want to know how I am doing, you need look no further than my living room - is the furniture in the same position as last time you saw it? No, of course it’s not. My cleaner thinks I’m a psychopath. “Every time, change!” says lovely Polish Anna every other week, whose lack of English gives her a directness I find oddly comforting. “ but still no bed for baby!”. Yes, Anna, because every day presents a change of need. Like clothes, like fasion, like the seasons - is that so strange?? And the baby has no bed because I cannot fathom possessing something with so little multifunction as a toddler bed. For as long as I can remember, the status of my mind has had a direct relationship with the arrangement of my furniture and the order of my belongings. I can’t be the only one. The connection I make between furniture placement and internal comfort can appear quite literally unhinged, as anyone who has ever shared a living space with me will attest.
