For me the biggest takeaway is that school communities, including teachers, admin and families, need to collaborate and create a safe space for students to be able to focus on learning. Address bullying and pinpoint the root of the problem. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools

I agree with that! Some bullies might not have the opportunity to speak to anyone. It's good to lend an ear and to teach the bully why they're in the wrong, not only in a punitive way. But in a genuine way that shows concern about them! #TeacherEd #safeschools

We as their teachers should respect their privacy and keep them out of "danger of being seen as the "snitch" or the weak kid that hides behind the adults. #TeacherEd #SafeSchools

I think every role needs a different approach. Obviously, all students need to know they are valued and supported by the school community.

Bullies talk about their struggles.
Victims and bystanders, SPEAK UP! A bully can't silence your voices.

I agree! It's better to speak up than to just sit back and watch as a spectator. Chances are at some point you're going to get it right and it will be excellent!

The biggest challenge is getting either student (aggressor or victim) to trust you, open up to you and let them help you. Aggressors also deal with problems themselves and very often take it out on their classmates, who they consider "weaker"

Earning a student's trust is key #TeacherEd #SafeSchools

I need to do that as well! I will try and set up a weekly newsletter or a weekly email that summarizes what we worked on, what assignments and skills students practiced on and any important dates (quizzes, tests, etc.)

tbh, haven't finalized my plan yet.

That is great! School wide events and activities raise awareness more efficiently! The schools communicates to the students that we all here are supportive and are here to listen!

One of my students created a podcast/vlog talk show in his own unique, way. Many kids would/could've made fun of it, but I looked at it very seriously and laughed whenever I found something funny.

Model the behavior you want the students to mimic!

TBH my school reacts quickly on matters such as harassment or bullying. I think it has to do with how important or urgent we make sth seem. We have to remember: something that seems "childish" to us, for our students is very significant! We should treat each time seriously #TeacherEd #SafeSchools

Consistency is so important! I noticed firsthand the difference between teachers who collaborate and are on the same page and ones who are less communicative with each other!

It does wonders! #TeacherEd #SafeSchools

Me and my colleagues work as a team a lot to create a safe space. We make sure that no disrespectful comments occur within the classroom and we make sure we create a learning opportunity out of such situations. We are in frequent comm with parents as well!

If students can realize that in school the ultimate goal is growth, not strengths and weaknesses the whole experience for them would be so different!

Imagine coming to school saying: "I'll challenge myself in Math today" instead of "I hate math because I don't get it"!

Since day one I told my students that in my class they can feel comfortable and respected. I treat them with kindness and respect, trying to model what they should do. We covered topics on inclusion, racism and homophobia!
Clear rules + posters to remind everyone of our rules! #TeacherEd #SafeSchool

My biggest takeaway is that technology, like many other things have benefits and challenges. It's nice to see that we all share some challenges! It's also wonderful to get ideas and inspiration from your peers!

That's so cool! I think possibilities are endless! That's the good part of technology

A5: I use a variety of technologies for communicating with families: Remind for text reminders, Class Dojo for photo sharing, and monthly ‘newsletter’ email updates. #TeacherEd #EdTech Looking for more ideas tho!

Honestly, I've been pretty basic as far as Parent Comm is concerned this year. Emails and phonecalls were my Go-To! However, even this is important because it shows parents you care and you want the best for the students!

I got some ideas from the chat for next year! 👀

These are so helpful! Many of us don't know that such apps or platforms exist! It is great to be able to connect with parents in such an easy way! #TeacherEd #TechEd

The amount of times I received responses with high level vocabulary, and in class I don't even get a fraction of that is very telling! I completely agree with you!

The paperwork side of it is life-saving!! I can't imagine keeping books or files of grades, hand-written for 150 students! Also for us who look for resources it is actually an incredible tool!

I think the biggest challenge is teaching that content is not the end all be all! At least in subjects like SS. There are basic skills, like vocabulary, reading, etc., that they need to develop before using tech. Critical thinking and Problem Solving are also essential for life! #TeacherEd #TechEd

That is great! We have daily CPT meetings with my team in my district. Since our school accommodates a large population, we are split into "Houses". So we work on strategies and problem solve daily! I think it's really beneficial, especially to new teachers!

Great idea!! Never thought of connecting online with colleagues from my field!! Thank you for sharing! #TeacherEd #TechEd
