Those scenes are meant to make you uncomofortable, it's part of the horror, but also part of Yoshiki discovering himself & a metaphor for internalized homophobia. It still doesn't make the story a romance. Romantic feelings alone do not make a romance story. HGSN is a coming of age story primarily.
