Live in Vermont. Former longshoreman, sheepherder, field biologist, infantryman, farmer, etc. BS, JD. Neither master, nor jack-of-all-trades.
Enjoyed very much the Schopenhauer binge I had yesterday and today. Bather Woods and Norberg were excellent. Perhaps it's time for me to dig out the Schopenhauer I read years ago.

I remember that one. Owen Flanagan is always very good.

A depressing and undignified spectacle.

One of my DC friends just sent an enthusiastic text: she loved Mad Boy. Not that she asked, but out of curiosity: is there a chance we'll see Henry Phipps again?

Enjoyed the episode. Is that a position you've held for long, or did it evolve as a result of the more recent deterioration and increased toxicity of the US political scene?

I think Endo's book is much bleaker than Unamuno's. Grossman's L&F is still waiting, but not for long. Needed a break from long novels.

I read it in Spanish, and It's only about 60 pages long. I have not read Endo's Silence. Manuel's martyrdom is that he is a beloved pastor in a poor, isolated village in very Catholic Spain who, out of kindness for his parishioners, does not reveal his total unbelief.

Yep. Read it a few years ago. Fascinating stuff.

Like him or not, he's a gutsy fellow.
