I miss old-school capitalism, in which raising capital was a means to the end, the end being manufacturing or commerce or the like. Today, industry is a means to the end, the end being accumulation of capital.

I would think that wanting to win the Nobel Peace Prize and wanting to rename Department of Defense to Department of War are two contradictory impulses - but what would I know?

I saw a social media post today claiming that the US has become a banana republic.

No.

The US is an orange republic.

Get your fruits straight, people!

In democracy, we should never look for superheroes - one or a few special individuals who will save the day. We should look for a bunch of everyday heroes to do their jobs diligently, sometimes going above and beyond to help others, who will, collectively, make the world a better place.

I think "hallucination" would be an apt collective noun for AIs.

What are their chief weapons?
- Surprise (if you had been complacent)
- Fear
- Ruthless "Efficiency" (in label only)
- Almost fanatical devotion to the President

Physicists who use the SI unit - why don't you switch over to cgs, so you can use Gauss as the unit of magnetic field density?

The defining culture war of today is between those of us who respect reality and those who don't. The latter falls into the trap of picking and choosing "theories" by preconception and convinience, and relying on wishful thinking to achieve their goals. (1/3)

We should never let them forget that Trump was elected partly by distancing himself from Project 2025 while campaigning. It's not what the voters wanted.

Instead of throwing spaghetti at the wall, Project 2025 is hitting many areas of the wall with a sledge hammer to see which parts fall down. The damages will be immense even to the parts that do not.

Hi Canada: okay, you win. If we promise not to try to make you into our 51st state, will you withdraw your invading force of arctic air to your side of the border? Thanks - The United States.

I'm coining a new term - Hi-Ho, short for "hallucination in, hallucination out." This describes certain AIs (and certain humans) after being trained exclusively on materials available online, with no connection to the wider reality. You can also describe it as "online smart but not reality smart."

My fondest wish is for Ebenezer Musk to be visited by three ghosts. I know it's a childish fantasy - Musk will never become a better man.
