it also helped to see this post from ages ago where s/one mentioned their doctor pointing out that there are very few things in nature that are naturally binary—eye color, skin color, height, personality—so why would someone’s gender be different?

i had some moments where i asked an ignorant question or unintentionally made a mistake. but the biggest thing was just realizing it’s not my job nor interest to categorize people. i also don’t ‘get’ people who like horror movies but i don’t have the right to tell them what they can and can’t do

it was a lot of things but the main one was i realized that even if i didn’t ‘get it’, that didn’t mean that i couldn’t respect it. i think a lot of times we have an urge to try to categorize people into neat boxes, but that’s not how people work.
