Happy to find a new vintage Schlenkerla in my local monopoly shop. Their Jahrgangsbiere are incredibly smooth. This one is smoke and marzipan. Nice while planning a Franconia trip in December.

My source here is @bamberg.bsky.social un his book 55X Verführt Bamberg. This goes way back to the 30 Year War, when the Swedish troops occupied the best quarters available. That they reached this far south is incredible. The Swedish national coat of arms?

This Danish Bock is not particularly tasty, but extra points for the amber color.

Very happy to find Schlenkerla Kräusen on tap at Cafe Sara in Oslo. But the young men behind the bar sruggled to understand the Umlaut. The last line of the taps, please. #Schlenkerla #Franken

At last. An honest beer label. Brewed with Weyermann Rauchmalr resmoked in a home smoker.

Today I learned how New Zealand is translated in Czech. You never know what might come in useful. And the beer was nice.

They can keep their hazy IPAs as long as there are beers like this around.

Thursday-Saturday next week is time for the highlight of the beer year in Norway - the Trondheim brewery festival. This year a good range of smoked beers, but there is something for everyone. I’ll be serving beers for Bygland and Rodebak. Everyone welcome!

Wherever I travel, I try to seek out a craft brewery. Including in Kalamata, Greece. Nice soft lagers with noble hops. Well received in the local tourist industry. Bonus: Sea turtles in the harbour!

Immensly refreshing Double IPA in the 2010 style. At Oslo Mikrobryggeri, a brewpub in operation since 1989.

Amazing. Rodebak has brewed a beer to honor me! Malt from Trøndelag, hops from Flanders. A hoppy Saison. On tap at selected places in Oslo, hope to pour it at @trønderskbryggerifestival in August.

An old fashioned beer festival. I tend to be backstage and along the crowd. And proud to pour a few glasses for Lindheim.

One of the first craft breweries in Norway, Haandbryggeriet, celebrates two decades. Two of the founders, Egil and Arne, are still involved. They have invited a fine line of fellow breweries to celebrate this weekend.

The last of the Easter brews. Påskepils from Bådin, a brewery in Bodø. Their football team does very well in Europe, and Bådin follows them for away games, brewing collabs with local breweries. This crisp and clean pils, however, they brew on their own.

De Halve Maan has a great range, and this gem is their triple getting a second fermentation with Brett. You get the Orval vibe, very drinkable with elements hard to describe. Trying this is imperative, pester your importer of Belgian bwers!

Strictly speaking, the season for Lentebier is over, but this gem from De Glazen Toren just turned up here in Oslo. Soft, fruity, the wheat malt adds the soft mouth feel. The oranges are just for decoration.

The label on the can sums it up - caramelized malts and American hops. From my good friends in Trondheim, Monkey Brew. From a humble start, they nail every style they go for. I’ll get some cans to go with my Easter slow cooked lamb.

In Luleå, at the top of the Baltic Sea, you’ll find the Pite brewery, now merged with the Bottenviken brewery. We are in the border region to Finland. This barley wine is boozy, spicy, sweet, but with some hops underneath. Dangerously drinkable, but, as said on the can, to be enjoyed with a book.

Nice to find beers from Quänum still on top form, even with new ownership. And good to see hotels in sleepy Swedish towns offer local beer, that’s what is needed to keep craft breweries alive.

Swedish brewey Nils Oscar nails all the classic styles, quite similar to Kinn in Norway. This Barley Wine is great, special order at Systembolaget picked up after a day outdoors.

Norwegian vintage beer ads. This one is from 1938. Generic Spring Beer ad. All breweries had to limit their beer range to a nationally approved list from the Brewery Association for most of the 20th Century. A cartel can be cozy if you are on the inside. @beerpuffery.bsky.social

Another vintage Norwegian beer ad. Påskebrygg from Hansa brewery ca 1936. «Light as a pils, but with the strength of a bock». @beerpuffery.bsky.social
