The poemlet often called "Fleas" (I believe it's anonymous; sometimes you find it billed as "the briefest poem in the English language"): Adam Had 'em. places our prickler squarely at The Beginning: it was naked flesh from the word "go." (Actually, fleas date from the Cretaceous, when a two-winged ancestor scavenger-insect discovered that blood was not only a nourishing swill, but high on the findability scale; wings atrophied, legs grew resourcefully jumpworthy: this was the proto-flea.) Goldbarth has written — addressing both the antiquity and the ubiquity of this intimate relationship — an "Addendum Couplet": As did Madam. and pretty much prides himself on it.

A prim old man in a rumpled hound's-tooth suit sat across from her and peered at her with wide rheumy eyes through horn-rimmed spectacles. Those eyes traveled from her unlaced black boots up her pale bruised legs to her paper hospital gown with the leather jacket, its lining stiff with dried blood, draped over it. In his lap, he held a package carefully; he sat very still with his long wingtips flat on the floor, heels together. The jostling of the bus across the winter-pitted asphalt rocked his stiff body from side to side, and the mobile tessellations of the hound's-tooth sent rhythmic waves of pain between Julia's temples. As the bus shook, she superstitiously kept her hand cupped over the location of her wound like a medieval horseman, cleaved from sternum to pommel, swaying on his headlong mount, trying to hold his guts in.
