The crew from the Kanata North Regeneration Stewards are slowly transforming a 1.9 km scrubby stretch of the Morgan's Grant Hydro corridor into a pollinator oasis. Giacomo met with gardeners Lyndee Wolf, Kulpreet Badial and James Kearnan to find out more. www.cbc.ca/listen/live-...

Native plants are fascinating. During the first year, perennial native seeds germinate, but primarily channel energy down into their root structures. Top growth is minimal; the plant seems to be “asleep.”
This Grey-Headed Coneflower (Ratibida pinnata) seedling is a good example.

For those who like to hike/bike in the
South March Highlands Conservation Forest, beware that Wild Parsnip is rapidly growing near the Klondike trail. Many other non-native invasive plants are also nearby so you (and your dogs) are safest staying on the trail. We are working to remove it.

We will continue working on our mini-meadow project this year, by adding the 2,300+ native plants our volunteers are growing.

Wild parsnip! If its sap gets on your skin, it can cause a nasty burn. If the sap gets in your eyes, it can blind you; its reputation is rightly earned.

However it’s really just parsnip. Which means, if you're careful, and aware of the dangers and how to avoid them, you can dig it up and eat it.
