So basically, we’re where we were post-Brexit, post-Johnson and post-Truss: absolutely fucked and we cannot ever get unfucked, because unfucking ourselves would require too many important people to annihilate their own careers by enraging the wealthy and their servants.

This is precisely what I mean. A lot of those games have historically been about as close to insignificant as it is possible for sport to be. And now, because of the gambling, they aren't.
