KNOWING Climate
@knowing-climate.bsky.social
HorizonEurope research project. KNOWING analyses the interaction of mitigation and adaptation measures. We help to identify the most suitable actions.
On 27 November, this process becomes real in Naples at the Pathway Workshop.

Municipal teams, agencies, utilities and experts will test the insights together. Because climate transformation only works when the people who implement it help design it.

In South Westphalia, data shows that wind energy expansion in forested areas barely reduces CO₂ storage and when paired with smart reforestation, overall emissions drop.

Climate neutrality doesn’t have to mean ecological trade-offs.

At the KNOWING Pathway Workshop, stakeholders came to review flood simulations and solutions. Sound climate action is rooted in data and the local conditions & constraints.

Granollers is now pairing green measures with "grey" infrastructure: modernising its sewer overflow system and reinforcing key upstream infrastructure.

The #modelling that shows the outcomes, comes from KNOWING. A realistic path forward, grounded in evidence.

Sometimes, you need green + grey to keep a city safe. 🏘️🌊

Catalan city of #Granollers is tackling rising #floodrisk from its River. Nature-based solutions help with infiltration & delayed runoff peaks but simulations from KNOWING show they can’t reduce flooding enough during long, heavy rains.

Spain’s climate transition is reshaping its cities.
In Granollers, near Barcelona, the focus lies on how to adapt urban infrastructure to #riverflooding while reducing emissions and improving quality of life.

Germany must designate 2% of its land area for wind energy in the coming years.
But what does this mean for nature and the environment? 🌱⚡️

Models shape how we see the world and how we move within it.
They frame what we call complex, and they guide how we respond.

But in the end, it’s people who make protection possible. 💡

Last week, Jesús Soler from AQUATEC presented our integrated approach at the Urban Drainage Modelling Conference 2025.

Thanks to AQUATEC, the City of Granollers, and the Consorci Besòs-Tordera for turning modelling into true teamwork!

#ModellingMonday – What’s the best energy mix to reach full decarbonisation? 🌍

More renewables alone aren’t enough! We need the right combination that holds up under stress. 👇

With ICM InfoWorks, developed by #AQUATEC and used in #KNOWING, we can simulate stormwater flows through a city.

It shows how green infrastructure like retention parks or river restoration can actually reduce risks and damages.

What if your city park could protect you from flooding? 🌳

Urban floods are becoming more frequent and costly. Nature-based solutions might be the key. 👇

The Heat Wave Local Effect Model (HWLEM), developed at L'Università Federico II and applied in #KNOWING, zooms in on these differences and tests solutions like:
🌱 Urban green spaces
🏫 School cooling shelters
🌇 Heat-smart neighbourhood design

🌡️ Heatwaves don’t hit every part of a city the same.
Some neighbourhoods suffer much more than others. 👇

How do measures help? Modelling for Naples show: already targeted measures reduces flood extent ≈ 1.4%; city-wide green-infra expansion ≈ 15.8%. That difference translates into millions saved. Posidonia meadows or living breakwaters save money, restore nature and make your city liveable #Resilience

How much can one extreme flood cost? In Naples modelling shows up to €463M per event, depending on the climate scenario (SSP) and which measures the city implements. Ambitious adaptation and climate awareness can cut costs by up to €270M per event vs inaction. #ClimateAdaptation #Naples

Is #windenergy in healthy #forests possible? 🌬️🌲

We did much wrong in Germany. Turning forests into weak plantations of timber. In KNOWING, the region of South Westphalia is now examining synergies and trade-offs in wind energy in forests. #climatechange 1/3

📊 #ModellingMonday

To plan climate action effectively, we need to understand how climate, mitigation, and adaptation measures interact.

Starting now, we’ll introduce one model each week in our new #ModellingMonday series.
