The term "tank top" emerged in the 1920s, sleeveless tops worn by swimmers in swimming tanks. 1950s, Marlon Brando and James Dean began wearing them as outerwear, casual fashion. The Navy used them standard issue under uniforms, common habit for soldiers wearing them as undershirts latter
