@samknight.bsky.social's #writingtips for new authors: Something I should have thought to post long ago and was reminded of at the book signing yesterday: being around your author friends recharges you. Not just your writing batteries, but your soul. Go find your local author friends.

@samknight.bsky.social's #writingtips for new authors: Everything is baby steps in writing. There is no fairytale where it all magically happens. Even those very few who make it "big" with their "first" book had to sit down and write it one word at a time. Keep realistic expectations.

@samknight.bsky.social 's #writingtips for new authors: The best way to learn is NOT the internet. It's from other authors who will tell it to you straight. Go to local events, meet local authors, be involved in your local writing community, and you will learn from others' mistakes.

@samknight.bsky.social's #writingtips for new authors: One of the hardest things about starting a writing career is getting people to leave a review. Be prepared when they say they will but never do. Also, never "sock puppet" your own reviews. It will come back to haunt you.

@samknight.bsky.social's #writingtips for new authors: It's okay if your entire idea is based upon a stuttered insult your brother messed up. Any idea is a place to start. What matters is where you go with it. Can you make that scene make sense within a story? Then write it! Payback!

@samknight.bsky.social's #writingtips for new authors: "I bought the car from the salesman with a combover." An example of an insidious misplaced modifier. They seem fine when we write them and even when we read them again. Then a reader wants to know how a combover became currency...

@samknight.bsky.social's #writingtips for new authors: Writing is like building a house. No matter how many tools and supplies you have, how good they are, and how well planned out it all is, if you just enjoy looking at them and thinking about what to do, it will never get done.

@samknight.bsky.social 's #writingtips for new authors: Bad writing advice is common. How can you tell if it's bad? Try it. If it doesn't work for you, it was bad. At least as far as you're concerned. It may be fine for someone else. We're all different. Just make sure you learn from it

@samknight.bsky.social 's #writingtips for new authors: Do you really need another book on writing? Probably not. You probably didn't need the first one. But then, maybe you need them all. At the very least, seeing other ideas and points of view are valuable, even if you reject them.

@samknight.bsky.social's #writingtips for new authors: Don't just jump in and publish on KDP. Even more so, don't just hire a company that promises to publish for you. They usually charge for stuff you can easily do for free. Look into all of the options and make an informed decision.

@samknight.bsky.social 's #writingtips for new authors: Essential desk tools: fingernail clipper, eyelash curler, tweezers, safety razor. If you've stared at the screen and played with a whisker, hangnail, eyelash until you had a sore, or plucked them all, you get it.

I cried until tears left a salty path on my cheeks, a tingle on the skin that needed relief. And I remembered I never cried in my old life. You couldn’t show weakness. But here, my body forgot that rule. -Whispering Heights

@samknight.bsky.social's #writingtips for new authors:

They seem to work in our minds when we write them, but they don't work in the readers' minds. This is one of the reasons why we all need editors.

@samknight.bsky.social's #writingtips for new authors: Write what you know doesn't mean you have to write about school or trucking, it means pour your heartaches, love, desires, and passions into your stories. Maybe you'll teach the reader something about smelting along the way.
