The Episcopal Church is descended from the Anglican Church, with which it still has ties. (It is part of the Anglican Communion). I’ve never had a private confession with an Episcopal priest but I take part in the general confession part of the service.

I remember women of my mother’s generation using female as a noun in a negative way, like “that female who lives next door” and like a euphemism for “witch”. But I thought that was the old lady version of trash talking.

Those are Mainline denominations, but is Mainline what the author means by “mainstream”? It is a little unclear.

The Church of England split off from the Roman Catholic Church. The Episcopal Church is an offshoot of the Church of England, but still has ties to it. In the 19th Century, the Oxford Movement made Anglican worship closer to Catholic in style, and it spread to the Episcopal Church.
