there are, of course, also those native to NZ that come up in Australia, and those native to Australia coming to NZ, which complicates things even more. see the below map for the range (red = AU, blue = NZ, grey = undetermined or mixed)

More recently, a multilocus genotypic study established that these distinct Australian and New Zealand mtDNA lineages in fact represent two distinct species: Eudyptula minor (endemic to New Zealand) and Eudyptula novaehollandiae (throughout southern Australia and along New Zealand's Otago coast).

both species are, confusingly, called the little blue penguin and the fairy penguin! you have two to four names used interchangeably for two different species. as of at least 2016 the two populations are actually considered distinct: pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

not false advertisement! sometimes you get a bird that's called like green heron (actually red-brown) or purple finch (red-pink, not actually near purple), but the bluebird's really just all there is to this guy
