Plus pre-poll voting if you can't get to a polling booth on election day due to work, travel or other commitments. But since so many in the US base their *entire being* around being Republican or Democrat, I can't imagine the difficulty in building a truly independent body to oversee the process.

This is how our political system keeps moving to the right. They stack as many positions as they're able with handpicked sympathisers while they're in power. But the Left gets in later and tries to do the "right thing", (or at least *be seen* to do the right thing), and refuses to change it again.
