I have this thing where I get older but just never wiser | Hachiman Defense Substack https://hachiman.substack.com/ | Formerly covered defense @ Popular Mechanics. Weapons person.
A B-25 Mitchell just flew over my head. Didn’t see it but sure heard it.

OK so this is a fun use of AI. I’m playing the Operations Vertitable and Grenade scenarios and asking Gemini what the nicknames of the armored and infantry divisions are.

“Hey Google what was the nickname of the US 5th Armored Division?”

“The ‘Victory’ Division.”

So far it’s been accurate.

Someone was “sick” and stayed home today from school but well enough to comb the beach with me barefoot after a king ride + minor storm.

My grandfather was very proud he was born in Kagoshima. He had this on the wall in the living room and when my grandmother died we kept it and it’s in my house.

Strengthening the defenses of my West Coast nonreligious elite bubble, which prefers pretend New York City doesn’t exist.

Yesterday’s Dungeness crab season opener disappointed almost everyone, but at least we had beach pizza.

Much better conditions for a jellyfish costume. Wind nearly zero.

Here’s a conversation we once had about knobs. I don’t know if it’s in the blog so I am reproducing here.

He is gray, I am the rube in blue who doesn’t know anything and says “wow”. These should appear in order.

When I asked the universe for barred surf perch, I should have specified *big* barred surf perch.

The neighborhood had a Halloween party but unfortunately the wind ripping off the Pacific Ocean was not kind to jellyfish costumes. We went home early and she and her classmates played around the house while the adults sipped martinis.

I spent a lot of time and $ gearing up for striper season, but when the time came didn't go out once because the weather was kinda crappy this summer. Fortunately there's an October run going on, which is slightly unusual, and my irresponsible spending has been redeemed. Both released.

Told myself I couldn’t order these until I actually went and did it. I hadn’t fished for striped bass at night for at least 20 years, but there’s a late season run going on right now and the beach is across the street.

As wet, nasty, and cold as I remember.

The base was named after a Confederate general, then after former 5 star general, Supreme Commander, Allied Expeditionary Force, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Hegseth really is the Cult of the Special Operations Operator personified. Here he is at play:

We think it actually belongs to a neighbor who took in one of our kittens last year. Wife thinks she mentioned having a ragdoll, and this is a ragdoll for sure.

I am maybe growing a little weary of being the neighborhood CSAR (Cat Search and Rescue) asset. Neighbor rang our doorbell and asked if this is our cat. No. But couldn’t leave it on the street so picked it up and pushed out flyers. Wife suspects it belongs to another neighbor we know.

Hmm, a bit pricey but would make for a nice model tank display.

Well, that was an unusual ASPEN flight. Can't remember when they've done that before. Heard it pass by, wish I'd known ahead of time.

Not often seen in these parts: two AH-1Z Vipers and (I think) one UH-1Y Venom. So much throb I thought it was an Osprey.

It breaks the war down into campaigns, has diagrams illustrating orders of battle and what a GER infantry unit looked like…but it also has an entire f—ing page on the drama between Churchill, Chamberlain, and Halifax. Like, are you kidding me? With just 192 pages to work with?

In the 2000s Amber Publishing put out a series of WW2 books on the German infantry, German panzer formations, Red Army units, etc. Definitely pop history but with some nice art. I finally picked up German Infantry in World War II.

Never used engraving before on Apple hardware. Already run into a snag.

So glad I got out of that tail-chasing dumpster fire.
