The Khmer Movement for Democracy condemns the brutal murder of Lim Kimya, a former Cambodian opposition MP and a French citizen, in Bangkok on Jan 7, 2025.

The killing follows a consistent pattern of transnational repression carried out by the government of #Cambodia.
Large turnout of 3,000 by the #Cambodia diaspora in Seoul, South Korea who still believe in democracy and the Paris Peace Agreements.

Those who took part were threatened with deportation by the Cambodian embassy in Seoul, yet other instance of transnational repression.

The unlimited wealth on display at the wedding of Cambodian deputy prime minister Neth Savoeun’s daughter in February is the fruit of decades of corruption. It was a slap in the face for ordinary Cambodians who are struggling desperately to survive.

Hun Sen's response to political debate has always been to seek to kill those who disagree with him. Having spent his formative years in the Khmer Rouge he doesn't know anything else.

Transnational repression has become a normal experience for the #Cambodia diaspora. Lack of a serious international response means that transnational repression is low-risk and low-cost for dictators such as Hun Sen. This is a failure of the rule of law in the countries where the diaspora lives.

#Cambodia needs to prepare for economic competition, in which it is capable of succeeding, and not for isolation, in which it would be doomed to fail.

It can start by dropping the charges against trade unionist Rong Chhun, who faces a Jan 17 court summons.
