The Last Witch by CJ Cooke - I have liked a lot of Cooke's other books but this one felt repetitive. The subject was nearly identical to some of her other novels and the characters did not interest me. This was well-researched but I was disappointed.

Second book of the year was The Mask Falling by Samantha Shannon! This dragged me along on a high-stakes journey but still gave its characters room to breathe. I find character work to be one of Shannon's strong points and this book does not disappoint.

Started the year with Blood on Her Tongue by Johanna Van Veen. This was a snappy, atmospheric gothic horror with a lot of deeply unsettling themes which I really enjoyed. Compelling characters, interesting motivations, and a creepy dose of body horror.
