Amanda Crocker from Penelakut studies Indigenous languages and is enrolled in a BA program at SFU. Her “goal is to help and assist … in the big job of carrying forward the sacred Hul’q’umi’num’ language learning and speaking to the next generation.”

She has spent her life in Coast Salish territory and is grateful to the people and land for their gifts and teachings. Her published writing includes poetry, short fiction and non-fiction. She lives on #Snuneymuxw territory and enjoys reading, watching hockey, and walking with her dog Raven.

Sharon believes in the power of Indigenous-led and community-determined programs to create lasting, sustainable change. Her PhD research titled, “Haq wil la hlo is sim: Walk Slowly on the Breath of your Ancestors,” examined Indigenous gift-giving and was inspired by her Grandfather’s teachings.

Snuneymuxw dad Cody King puts his daughter Nevaeh in junior hip-hop classes thanks to the bursary: “It’s incredibly impactful, she’s made so many friends and has picked up life skills while burning energy. Physically being able to do it is awesome, but it also does wonders for her mental health.”

He has advised and facilitated treaty negotiations in his role with the B.C. Treaty Commission. A talented trumpet player, he studied music at UBC, as well as geography at Malaspina College (now @viuniversity.bsky.social ). Huy ch’q’u Brent for your support of our work!

He has been working in politics since 2007 when he became the Manager of the band office. Brent also worked with Indigenous Northern Affairs in their capitol division and helped First Nations across the province develop their infrastructure.
