He had a deep knowledge of much, especially the whole Bible, it seems. Not so difficult if your 'job' is to debate, no? He got always the same questions and he had his moral basis with the Bible to back him up.
Even then, one can disagree. Eventually he debates about his opinions.

But people came for that. So if it works, it works.
