CDC employees standing up and walking out in light of the mass shootings, firings, and *waves hands in the air* everything else.

Lets gooooo
August 28, 2025 at 7:00 PM
Four CDC buildings shot up. Employees under lockdown and in fear for hours. Public health is physically under attack, and the silence from the administration is deafening.

Annnnddddd

❌Thousands of Louisianans will lose healthcare.
❌33 LA hospitals are at risk of closing
❌Thousands of children won’t get food

Seems like a real winner.

As we say in epidemiology, bugs have ears.

Panhandle measles outbreak keeps a growin'. Official count (as of March 11) is 255 cases across 3 states. Oklahoma...welcome to the party.

Like I said in the YLE yesterday, I think this is a gross estimation of the true size.

Nonetheless, if you're fully vaccinated, you're very well protected.

West Texas measles outbreak latest count: 159

Looks to be slowing down. CDC sent out a response team this week, too, which will hopefully help even more.

As of Feb 18, the U.S. is answering 1,800 fewer research questions to improve the quality of life and longevity of Americans. This is not America first.

West Texas measles outbreak update: Now 145 cases total. Seems to be slowing down, but be careful coming to this conclusion. It's unclear whether it's from true containment or lack of reporting/cooperation. Just have to watch how this unfolds.

Big thanks to public health workers on the front line!

Sec. Kennedy, you're incorrect. This *is* an unusual year for measles. This year has already passed 8 out of the past 15 years' *annual* counts. And we are only 2.5 months into 2025.

Rather than falsehoods, you should publicly state support for MMR. Today marks the first measles death in 10 years.

For those of you interested in following along- Here are the # of cases in West Texas outbreak over time. It's clearly growing quickly, but not as fast as it could be due to 75% of the population being vaccinated, (likely) behavior change, and the amazing work of public health workers on the ground.

A press release from Hays County Health Dept (TX) re: possible measles exposure is incredible.

I've never seen a more valiant effort to describe potential exposure locations. Look at this map! Making invisible work visible. Clearly and timely communicated to the public.

More of this please.

And they say epidemiologists are fearmongers…

As someone who’s walked past protests *against* CDC at campus a number of times, this makes my heart full. Big protest in *support* of CDC ❤️

More of this please. Your front line workers need it.

Happy Monday, y’all.

Football, food, music, commercial, Taylor Swift. Here we gooooo!

But, first a public service announcement from an epidemiologist:

This is one of the most dangerous days for women—domestic violence, human trafficking.

Check on your friends today.

Evolution shows that species thrive not in isolation but through deep connections to their ecosystems. Nature knows diversity isn’t a threat—it’s resilience. Like a tree in a forest, no organism stands alone; roots intertwine, sharing resources and enriching the soil. It’s not a zero-sum game.

(Fires are important to learn about too but timely biosecurity is a very odd choice to skip.)

Also, they accidentally included a chart about cats and bird flu in the fire article.

What’s going on? Who knows, but it’s not pretty.

22 Public Health Accomplishments in 2024!

I couldn’t be more proud to be in public health. We continue to accomplish so much with so little, and the work is often invisible.

Here’s to 2025. Happy New Year!

-Although we have numerators and denominators now, be careful calculating rates, like severe disease (i.e., like 1/61). So much uncertainty around “true” rate of detection

-This table is already out of date, given new Wisconsin human case announcement
-Unknown exposures most concerning

Because this means 20,000,000 physicians and scientists around the world think they are safe.

An interesting start to Make America Healthy Again

Good news for your feed! Pew reports a 3 point increase in trust in scientists. 5 point uptick among republicans.

Where are improvements needed? Communication, particularly humility and listening to concerns on the ground.

Have a lot of work to do.

I got the Your Local Epidemiologist team together for a virtual plant party! Plant kits were mailed and we spent an hour planting, learning about greenery, and laughing and chatting. Now, we have pieces of paradise for our desks. Something I think everyone needs.

Forever thankful for this team.
