Lol I'll just say that all the Uplift War books leave a bad taste but Kiln People was lots of fun

Lmao I didn't find his argument particularly compelling because he was willfully misunderstanding the context. But he DID have a point

And as Epstein's near-illiterate emails prove, it seems the oligarchs are *this* close to being the Eloi from HG Wells's Time Machine - incurious, barely verbal creatures who'd drown in the rain, if you let them

Lmao feigning your own death so your toddler stops asking, ". . . But why?" is certainly a power move

They were led to believe that people think they're cool and they're not

It's like whenever I'd say that Elon stumblefucking his way through a sentence didn't make him sound very smart, I'd have people try to convince me he was, or at least he *used to be* more coherent, etc

I mean, at the time that line was written, the context imo was much more along the lines of a self help guru, so the audience is encouraged to believe that unequivocal faith/belief is a good quality

(I also remember author David Brin bristling at how unscientific and fatalistic it sounded lol)

It's been so funny to watch oligarchs in NYC going through mass hysteria about a 2% tax increase they'll never notice, and 5 "socialist" grocery stores out of 15k like it's the end of the world

You mean a . . . Rump roast?

Honestly, one of the more clever subversions of Yoda's Jedi maxim

I mean, Grok's performance over the weekend is Exhibit A

They want to produce books but cut out both the writers and the readers

(I'm realizing I really need to rewatch Altman's The Player to watch an odious Tim Robbins say more or less the same thing)

This just shows me Elon is so bad at coming up with disses that he thought everyone needed Triumph the Insult Dog on their phone

Yeah, I've often said that I'm much less worried about piracy than I am of all the perfectly legal ways in which I can be screwed over

In "Puerto Rico: A National History", Jorell Meléndez-Badillo talks about how "Diasporicans" make circular migrations, and "jumping the puddle" becomes a way to reconnect with the cultures of the archipelago

Brincando Charcos (Jumping Puddles)
“Dónde estámos?” Mateo asks, wiping the wetness out of his hair. We’re both sopping wet. Charcos may get you there fast, but it’s not the cleanest way to travel.
