Unfortunately, the leverage Democrats had to extract real policy changes was squandered under Schumer’s failed leadership. Instead of holding the line to force negotiations on a real solution, he allowed a surrender that Republicans seized as fuel for the fire for their extremist healthcare agenda.

The GOP blocked extension of the ACA subsidies. This is morally repugnant, and also everybody knew this fight was lost the second that Senate Dems surrendered on the shut down last month. In the coming primaries, we're looking for Dems who will actually use their power and fight back.

Trump sent Vance there twice. He threatened to cut off all federal spending to the state. He vowed to back primary challengers of any Republican who voted against him here. He posted their names online, prompting his fans to send them death threats.

But all that failed, so now he wasn't involved.
