#OTD 45 years ago... (31 Oct 1980) BBC graphics designer Doug Burd visited Pearce Studios and asked me to do some of his work for him - drawing a line of robots for the Encyclopedia Galactica. I sneaked in a few in-jokes to the animation for ep 2 of Hitchhiker's Guide (TV series).

If you see this, quote with a robot that isn’t from “Star Wars,” “Star Trek,” “Doctor Who,” or “Transformers".

From my family's collection - our Ferguson TV set, in around April 1964. I remember the sound the channel changer dial (on the right side) made as it clunked around. Sadly, an unsteady hand meant a blurred exposure. I wonder what was on at the time? Dig the very 50s wallpaper though!

Just been reminded of the time my family and I were kindly invited by a friend to look around #Leavesden Studios whilst #HarryPotter and The Prisoner of Azkaban was in production. Here we are with Buckbeak, the Hippogriff. This was long before the official tour was built.

Ha ha! Thanks. I did animation for 13 years then made a lot of documentaries for 30. I art-directed "The Illustrated Hitchhiker...", a big silver book for Douglas in 1994, if you ever saw that?

#OTD 45 years ago (7 Oct 1980) according to my diary, I drew these images for the Hitchhiker's Guide BBC TV series. Douglas Adams as both the ad exec and as Paula, the worst poet in the universe. I was 19 years old and having fun.

Top right is the door communcation panel as seen recycled later by the BBC in "Blake's 7" and on Marvin the Paranoid Android's chest unit. A BBC FX designer told me about it.

I was told the kind of orange smoke FX they used regularly on shows like Dr.Who (L) and Dad's Army (R), etc turned out to be carcinogenic, so it was eventually banned. (How many actors got clobbered before they found out?)

That was to have been a fully animated moment, but was taking too long for my old boss Rod Lord to animate its jaw opening, etc. We talked about it and decided a quick scan to her being gobbled up, legs and walking stick waving about would suffice...

Was reminded today of the first time I went to meet Sci-Fi fans who assembled on the first Thursday of each month at the One Tun pub, on Saffron Hill, near Farringdon station, London. It was March 1978 - my friends and I were looking forward to a new Spielberg movie opening later that month...

Hello, Bluesky folk. I went for a walk over the local park here in North London. A chill in the air, but the afternoon sun was warm on my face.
